Investing in next generation infrastructure
Denmark has one of the highest rates of internet usage in the world, with 97 per cent of Danes expected to regularly access the internet by 20222. As more households and businesses go online and the variety of digital services and entertainment grows, it is vital that Denmark’s communications infrastructure keeps pace with consumers’ ever-increasing demand for data.
Established in 1882, TDC is Denmark’s incumbent telecommunications provider – connecting more than six million people via towers, fibre, cable, and wireless network infrastructure3. Recognising the significant role TDC will play in securing Denmark’s digital future, MIRA and its co-shareholders acquired and de-listed the business from the Copenhagen Stock Exchange in 2018 and committed to a major programme of investment in fibre and 5G.
Developing digital Denmark
Upon MIRA’s acquisition of TDC, the business affirmed its vision for all Danes to have access to 1Gbps broadband and the highest quality mobile network.
To help achieve this vision, TDC reorganised its operations to create two distinct businesses – one focused on the design, development, and operation of network infrastructure; the other on enhancing digital and customer experience. To further strengthen its focus on Denmark, TDC also divested its legacy operations in Norway.
Today, MIRA and its co-shareholders are actively supporting TDC as it embarks on one of the largest and most complex capital investment programmes in its history – upgrading and expanding its fibre network for one million households and businesses. The large-scale fibre rollout will help future-proof Denmark’s digital infrastructure, ensuring TDC’s network has the capacity to accommodate the country’s growing data needs for years into the future.
TDC is also committed to strengthening Denmark’s mobile connectivity, with MIRA supporting the business as it invests early and at scale to deliver the country’s next generation mobile network. Following years of planning and investment, TDC’s 4G mobile network now covers 99.5 per cent of Denmark and is consistently recognised as providing the country’s best mobile experience3,4. With its eyes to the future, TDC launched an ambitious plan to roll out 5G across Denmark by the end of 2020. The initiative will ensure TDC remains a market leader in mobile connectivity, whilst enabling Danes to harness the opportunities offered by emerging digital services and applications.

Fostering digital inclusion
As the largest telecommunications provider in Denmark1, TDC recognises that it has a special responsibility to foster digital inclusion within the community. As part of this, TDC is championing a number of partnerships and initiatives designed to bring Danes closer together.
One such initiative established by TDC is “Parents in the Digital World”. Delivered in collaboration with Child Helpline, a long-term partner of TDC, the programme aims to combat cyber bullying in Denmark by helping parents teach their children about positive and safe behaviour online. TDC has also led the “WiFive” initiative, helping students aged 10-12 strengthen their digital awareness. Through this programme, TDC is supporting children as they hone their online skills and gain their “digital driver’s license”.
In addition to these initiatives, TDC has supported ENIGMA (Denmark’s Museum of Post, Tele and Communication) and encouraged greater civic engagement amongst young people through their sponsorship of major youth events in Denmark.
