Paraway Pastoral Company Limited (Paraway) is one of the largest pastoral land owners in Australia¹, with carrying capacity for 220,000 cattle and 250,000 sheep across 4.4 million hectares.

Since MAM established the business in 2007, Paraway has remained focused on reducing its environmental impact.

More sustainable farming

The world’s population is expected to reach 9.8 billion by 2050². This trend, combined with rising incomes in emerging economies, is forecast to drive a 60 per cent increase in red meat consumption over the next 30 years³.

To help meet this demand in a sustainable way, Paraway is implementing initiatives designed to reduce the carbon emissions intensity of livestock, focused on 10 farms across its 27 property aggregations. Paraway Pastoral was the first Australian agricultural producer to use the Beef Herd Cattle Management methodology, under the Australian Government’s Emissions Reduction Fund scheme, to reduce emissions per kilogram of liveweight produced. By reducing the average age of a herd, limiting the proportion of unproductive animals, and actively managing the number of animals in each livestock class, Paraway Pastoral is on track to achieve its targeted abatement of 231,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions across its portfolio over seven years.

Protecting native wildlife and vegetation

To help preserve Australia’s unique biodiversity, Paraway has made sustainability and sound environmental management a key performance metric for its farm management teams.

With a number of properties bordering National Parks and state conservation areas, Paraway is working closely with local authorities to protect vegetation, waterways and wildlife through ongoing investment in fencing, pest control and bushfire management initiatives.

This focused approach has seen the business take an active role in fostering the preservation of marshes and wetlands in the central and southern regions of New South Wales (NSW).

At Paraway’s first property, Pooginook Station, the farm’s management team is working in partnership with the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage to restore approximately 200 hectares of wetlands – installing new fences and overseeing initiatives to enable greater water flow. Similar work is being done to preserve and develop the Macquarie Marshes – a protected natural wetland reserve on the edge of Paraway’s Oxley cattle station.
